The Mountain Common Loop
One of the island’s most rewarding walks, the Mountain Common Loop, takes hikers to the highest point on Inishturk. This trail begins in the harbour and gradually ascends. Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the Mayo and Galway coastline, Clare Island, Achill and Inishbofin. From the summit, visitors can enjoy uninterrupted 360-degree views, where on clear days, the distant Twelve Bens mountain range in Connemara can be seen, also Croagh Patrick and Mweelrea. The loop then descends gently through lush fields, where sheep graze, and leads walkers back to the Community Club, making it an ideal hike for anyone looking to experience the island’s dramatic scenery without the need for technical hiking skills.
The Lough Coolaknick Loop
For those who prefer a shorter, more relaxed walk, the Lough Coolaknick Loop offers a gentler route that winds around one of the island’s few freshwater lakes, Lough Coolaknick. This trail is perfect for families or those looking for a leisurely walk-through Inishturk’s quiet interior. The loop takes walkers past the shores of the lake, home to a variety of bird species, offering a serene break from the more dramatic coastal scenery. This walk also provides insight into the traditional farming practices of the island, as the path passes through fields that have been worked by generations of islanders. In the spring and summer months, the trail is lush with wildflowers, making it a picturesque stroll for nature lovers.
